Adam Plachetka at the Metropolitan opera

  • Adam Plachetka at the Metropolitan opera

This autumn, acclaimed Czech bass-baritone Adam Plachetka will once again appear before audiences of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he will spend nearly three months from September through the end of November. During this prestigious engagement, Plachetka will perform in two major roles — Leporello in Mozart’s Don Giovanni and, for the first time in his career, Escamillo in Bizet’s Carmen. He returns to the American continent just half a year after portraying Count Almaviva in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro at the Met.

Plachetka will first appear on the Met stage on September 24 as Leporello, a role he will reprise in eight additional performances throughout October. Beginning at the end of October, he will take on the role of Escamillo, the celebrated toreador in Carmen — marking his debut in the part. In total, he will appear in seventeen performances at one of the world’s most prestigious opera houses.

“I really enjoy performing at the Metropolitan Opera — I have extensive experience with Leporello, while Escamillo offers me the chance to explore a somewhat different vocal and dramatic dimension. I’ve received offers for this role for quite some time, but something always got in the way, including the Covid pandemic. So I believe that now the right moment has finally come,” said Adam Plachetka before his departure for the United States.

Adam Plachetka is one of the most prominent Czech singers of his generation. His repertoire spans a wide range of operatic, concert, and oratorio works. He regularly appears at leading international venues such as the Vienna State Opera, La Scala in Milan, and, of course, the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
